Haas tops Tanihara in consolation match

AUSTIN, Texas – It’s not exactly ideal to play the consolation match at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, but for Bill Haas there is something to be said for competitive pride.

Although the winner of the consolation match receives more FedEx Cup points and a larger share of the purse, for Haas – who lost to runner-up Jon Rahm, 3 and 2, in Sunday’s semifinal – if he was going to play he was going to make the most of it against Hideto Tanihara in the undercard bout.

“You want to come out on top. I think that would have stung even more to lose both matches on Sunday,” Haas said. “I played my worse that match of any match. And I think maybe he was a little tired as well as I was. But I was fortunate, a few good breaks on the back nine, and he missed a few putts for me.”

After Tanihara took a 2-up lead through nine holes, Haas rallied to win the 10th and 11th holes and closed out the match with a par at the 17th for a 2-and-1 victory. The third-place showing was Haas’ best finish at the Match Play.
