But when he pulled out of the event after 11 holes, well, let’s just say the scene quieted down for the other two players in the group, reigning FedEx Cup champion Billy Horschel and the very popular Rickie Fowler.
Horschel said he saw Golf Channel’s Curt Byrum leave the group, and then watched as the horde of media raced after Woods as he headed toward the players’ parking lot. So Horschel turned to Fowler and estimated that about 50 fans would stick with them – and right he was.
“We went from 600 or 700 people watching us to 50, so we became chopped liver,” Horschel said. “We realized where we stand in this game of golf, and we had a good joke about it.
“Basically, it was 50 people watching us. Rickie has probably 45 of them that live in San Diego. I’ve got five, and just because I won the FedEx Cup and they still don’t even know who I am.”
