Inspired Martin has shot at second British title

WOBURN, England – Mo Martin checked her cell phone before teeing off Friday at the Ricoh Women’s British Open.

There was a text from her mother, who is back in California.

Linda Martin told Mo she was up polishing the Ricoh Women’s British Open trophy that Mo won two years ago at Royal Birkdale. Mo gave it to her mother for safe keeping.

“It was really sweet to get her message,” Mo said. “She just said, ‘Great memories, play well.’”

Martin did.

With a 4-under-par 68, Martin moved three shots off the lead going into the weekend.

Martin said she was inspired. In fact, she’s inspired just about every time she looks up at Woburn Golf Club, with the Ricoh Women’s British Open’s logo featuring an outline of the Open trophy. Martin said she’s also inspired by the warm welcome Brits are giving her as one of their champions. A pair of young girls with “Go Mo” badges followed her the entire day, even through the hard rain that fell later in the round.

“I look over, and they are there in the rain, their hair is matted down and wet, they’re so cute,” Martin said.

Martin would relish having a second Women’s British Open trophy for her mother to polish, but ...

“I'm not getting ahead of myself, got the weekend ahead of us,” Martin said. “It’s been a great start and want to continue what I'm doing and executing what I can.”
