Langley heads to weekend with another shot at victory

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W. Va. – Starting the day with sole possession of the lead, things got considerably more difficult for Scott Langley at The Greenbrier Classic.

After holing putt after putt during his opening-round 62, Langley managed only three birdies en route to a workmanlike 1-under 69. It was still good enough to maintain a share of the lead, as he sits alongside Jhonattan Vegas at 9 under and one shot clear of seven other players.

“It was a little tougher day for me,” Langley said. “Following up a round like a 62 is never super easy mentally, but I hung in there today, didn’t have much going for most of my round, but made a bunch of pars and was able to make two birdies coming in for my last few holes. Really ended the day on a real positive note, so I was pretty happy with the score, all things considered.”

Langley got off to a similarly strong start last week at the Travelers Championship, but got derailed by a third-round 73. He bounced back in the final round, shooting a 67 that netted his first top-25 finish since February, and the 26-year-old brought that momentum with him this week to the Old White TPC.

“I really didn’t even play that poorly on Saturday, I just didn’t make any putts and all of a sudden I shot 3 over,” he said. “I didn’t make any birdies, got shut out. That doesn’t really happen that often. So it was just kind of a weird day, and then I finished last week on a real positive note.”

Langley is in his third full season on the PGA Tour and has contended before, finishing third at both the 2013 Sony Open and the 2014 Valspar Championship. With another chance to feel the pressure of the weekend spotlight, Langley hopes to translate his past experience into a breakthrough victory.

“It’s good to keep putting myself in that position,” he said. “The more and more I’m there, the more comfortable I’ll get, and the odds are becoming more in my favor that I’ll have two good days on the weekend.”
