Damaged greens at next week's WGC-HSBC

Players should brace for less than ideal conditions at next week’s WGC-HSBC Champions, according to a memo sent to players from the PGA Tour.

The hottest summer in 130 years in Shanghai has left some of the greens at Sheshan Golf Club in poor condition and forced the grounds crew to re-turf or plug many putting surfaces.

The memo, which was sent to players this week and obtained by GolfChannel.com, said officials were “confident of delivering tournament quality surfaces for the start of the championship,” and before/after photos of the third, sixth and 18th greens showed the improvements that have been made in recent weeks.

Heavy rains and temperatures that exceeded 105 degrees for 32 consecutive days are to blame for the condition of some of the bent-grass greens, and members at the club played a number of temporary greens for “several months.”
