PHOENIX – Stacy Lewis leads the way through the first round of the JTBC Founders Cup.
With an 8-under-par 64, she finished up the suspended opening round Friday morning one shot ahead of Hyo Joo Kim and two shots ahead of Lydia Ko, Tiffany Joh, Sophia Popov, Kim Kaufman and Karine Icher at Marriott’s Wildfire Golf Club.
Defending champion Karrie Webb was three back.
Michelle Wie opened with a 73.
Lewis won the Founders Cup two years ago, using the victory to claim the Rolex No. 1 world ranking for the first time. She tied for second last year.
With a four-hour suspension of play Thursday due to rain, Lewis was left with 12 holes to play on Friday. After bogeying her first hole upon returning, she went on a tear, making birdies at seven of the next nine holes. She left the scoring area afterward for a quick lunch before heading back out for the second round.
“If you've got to play a lot of holes, and you're on a roll, that's where you want to be,” Lewis said of the challenging of going straight back out. She’s scheduled to play 30 holes on Friday.
“Things feel good,” he said.
Ko finished up the first round Thursday and wasn’t scheduled to head back out until 4:10 p.m. local time (7:10 ET).
