Lexi Thompson mounted a charge Saturday to get in the hunt to win her second major championship.
With a 5-under-par 66, Thompson moved one shot behind the leader, Mi Hyang Lee (70), going into Sunday’s final round.
Thompson, 20, is seeking her sixth LPGA title, her second major championship. She won the ANA Inspiration last year for her first major.
“I just gave myself a lot of opportunities today, and that's what you've got to do,” Thompson said. “They pulled a couple tees forward, so the majority of the par 5s you could reach it in two. Couple of them I didn't take advantage of that, but it's a pretty solid round.”
Thompson was hot with her putter Saturday, needing just 25 putts. She hit 17 of 18 greens in regulation the day before but made just one birdie putt shooting 72. She struggled with 36 putts in the second round.
“I just kind of figured out a little something with my putting that worked and that helped me out today,” Thompson said. “I didn't hit it that great off the tee today. I hit it a lot better off the tee yesterday, but I just made more putts today.”
