McIlroy four behind Garcia after 6-under 64

AKRON, Ohio – So much for those Freaky Fridays for Rory McIlroy.

After suffering an inexplicable run of poor performances during second rounds, McIlroy posted a 66 during his Open Championship-winning campaign and shot a 6-under 64 at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational on this Friday to get into contention for another victory.

“It's not like I could put it down to anything that was happening on Fridays,” he said afterward. “But it's nice to put it to bed and shoot a couple of good second round scores. I'm in a great position going into the weekend, which I'm really happy about.”

Following an opening-round 69, McIlroy finds himself four strokes behind leader Sergio Garcia.

A victory this week would emulate his 2012 season, when he won the PGA Championship, then continued momentum with two more PGA Tour wins before the end of the season.

“I'm still four back going into the weekend, but I feel like that could have been a lot more. So it's a good finish.”
