AUGUSTA, Ga. – Gary Player poked the Golden Bear, so Jack Nicklaus brought in a secret weapon: Rory McIlroy.

McIlroy was practicing Monday at the Bear’s Club in South Florida when Nicklaus approached. They chatted for a couple of minutes before Thursday’s ceremonial tee shot was brought up.

Player had sent out this playful tweet a few weeks ago:

So McIlroy helped Nicklaus gain a few extra yards.

“I adjusted his driver for him, because he’s trying to hit it longer than Gary Thursday morning,” McIlroy said. “I told him, if he hits it longer than Gary, I want a mention because I adjusted the weight in his driver.”

McIlroy said that Nicklaus kept hitting his drivers left. After the little tweak, Nicklaus started hitting baby fades.

“I was like, ‘Perfect, there you go,’” McIlroy said.

“It’s amazing how competitive he still is,” he added. “It’s unbelievable.”
