McIlroy's Open ball nabs $52K at auction

Rory McIlroy made more than $1.6 million for his victory at the Open Championship. His golf ball fetched a nice sum, too.

After holing out for his third major last month, McIlroy tossed his golf ball into the crowd. Englishman Lee Horner was the lucky fan who caught the ball, and Sunday the Nike RZN Black was sold at auction for $52,038, according to ESPN's Darren Rovell.

The buyer wanted to remain anonymous, but Green Jacket Auctions co-founder Ryan Carey told Rovell there were 22 bidders from around the world.

Bidding reportedly started at $1,000 Monday and quickly escalated as the week went on. Carey said only a ball autographed by Bobby Jones sold for more at $55,865.

If you're at the PGA Championship today, you might want to hang around the 18th green ... just in case.
