Mediate inspired by Trump call en route to Sr. PGA win

Rocco Mediate won his maiden PGA Tour Champions major this past week at the Senior PGA Championship and gave credit to a good friend.

“Mr. Trump, obviously. Our next president. That guy,” Mediate said Wednesday to Matt Adams on “Fairways of Life.”

Mediate opened the Senior PGA with a 9-under 62 and won the event at Harbor Shores wire-to-wire. Prior to his second round, Mediate said he received a call from the presumptive Republican nominee for president.

“So he calls and he goes, ‘Hey, listen, just wanted to say, great playing yesterday. Proud of ya,” Mediate said. “Go out there, don’t worry about anything, enjoy yourself. I gotta go speak to 26,000 [people]. I’ll talk to you in the next couple of weeks.”

Mediate sports “Trump” embroidered on his shirtsleeve and said, “We play golf a few times a year. Of course, now he’s busy.”

Asked by Adams if the Trump phone call was inspiring, Mediate responded:

“Absoultely, it was. Because who else was [called by Trump]? Nobody. So cool that he took two minutes out of his day to say nice playing, go do your job.”
