NAPA, Calif. – The week’s marquee group at the Safeway Open will not be as high profile as officials had originally hoped, but it will still pack a punch.
Mickelson has only played the event once in 2007 when it was held in Scottsdale, Ariz., but is fresh off the best Ryder Cup performance of his career two weeks ago. He was reportedly going to be paired with Tiger Woods, who withdrew from the event on Monday.
The top morning group (7:50 a.m.) will be Paul Casey, Justin Thomas and Wesley Bryan. Casey moved back inside the top 5 in the world rankings, and although he didn’t win in 2016, he finished the season with a pair of runner-up finishes and a fourth-place showing at the Tour Championship.
Bryan won three times on the Web.com Tour last season and will be a rookie in 2017, while Thomas finished tied for third last year at Silverado Resort & Spa.
