HOYLAKE, England – Much was made of the bet Gerry McIlroy, the father of 2014 Open champion Rory, made 10 years ago that his son would win the claret jug by the time he was 25.
Gerry McIlroy pooled 400 pounds (about $680) with three friends for the bet that offered 500-to-1 odds. On Sunday following his two-stroke victory Rory McIlroy was asked about the wager.
“Honestly, that 50 grand that he's going to win is way . . . I mean, the other three friends that he did that with, they're going to be very happy,” said McIlroy, who collected 975,000 pounds for the victory. “He's never reminded me. I knew that he'd done it. I'm not sure if it will pay out. If it does, it's a nice little bonus.”
McIlroy was also asked if his father had any other bets on his future performances?
“Not that I know of. You'll have to ask him,” he smiled.
