Pettersen: Harmon perks include Phil

HARRISON, N.Y. – Suzann Pettersen said being under Butch Harmon’s wing as her coach now comes with perks beyond his expertise.

Pettersen won the Manulife LPGA Classic last weekend, her first victory since aligning herself with Harmon at the end of last year. She said she relishes being privy to the expertise of his team of select players, and she’s taking advantage of that.

Pettersen said she played a round of golf with Phil Mickelson earlier this year that has helped her short game. He’s a fellow Harmon pupil.

“Butch doesn't have too many women on his team,” Pettersen said. “Butch works with the best male players in the world. He's surrounded by great guys. They all have different skills. I've already had practice days with mostly all of his guys. I got to play a round of golf with Phil Mickelson, which was very inspirational for me. Got to kind of pick his brain about his short game. Stuff like that. You can't necessarily buy that off a teacher because I think the best advice you get out there is from the players themselves. So, being on Butch's team kind of allows me to get more knowledge of not just Butch himself but also his players.”

Harmon limits the players he works with to Mickelson, Rickie Fowler, Dustin Johnson, Brandt Snedeker and Jimmy Walker. Natalie Gulbis is the only other woman Harmon teaches.

“I was fortunate enough for Butch to kind of allow me in,” Pettersen said. “I must say, he's been very impressive so far. Hands on, genuinely interested in trying to make you a better player. And what I like is he's very current.”
