Pressel nearly holed out for eagle from the 18th fairway Sunday toward the end of the ANA Inspiration. Her wedge from 99 yards checked up inches from the hole, leaving her a tap-in birdie that left her one shot out of a playoff.
Nine years ago, Webb holed out for eagle from 116 yards to get herself into a playoff here at Mission Hills. It led to the last of Webb’s seven major championship titles. Strangely, Pressel was Webb’s playing partner that year.
“It was crazy,” Pressel said of her near repeat.
Pressel said before the shot she turned to her caddie, Rock Cesarz.
“I said, `Let’s just call this like Webby,’” Pressel said. “I can’t believe it basically hit the hole.”
It was a big week for Pressel, who won the 2007 Kraft Nabisco, becoming at 18 the youngest woman to win a major championship. Pressel made her name conjuring her best in the game’s biggest events, the majors. She had that gritty form again this week and a new swing starting to work for her.
“Right now, I certainly feel good about my game,” Pressel said. “I know that I can improve. So that's always a good thing. I don't feel I got everything possible out of my game. I feel like there is a lot of room for improvement, so it's looking up.”
