Rookie Grillo heading to Tour Championship

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – A birdie on the 72nd hole gave Emiliano Grillo his best finish of the year, and it meant that the Argentine will be heading to East Lake for the season-ending Tour Championship.

Grillo rolled in an 8-foot putt on the final green to close out a 2-under 69 that left him in a tie for second at 8 under alongside Sean O’Hair, one shot behind Patrick Reed. While he’s had a consistent season, the result marks Grillo’s first top-10 finish since winning the season-opening Open in October.

“It was a very tough week. The beginning of the week, I said if we managed to get around 7 under, it’s going to have a chance,” Grillo said. “It’s a U.S. Open golf course. It wasn’t a U.S. Open, but it was almost like one.”

Grillo started the week at No. 32 in the FedEx Cup standings, but the runner-up finish vaults him all the way to No. 6 in the updated standings. It guarantees that the 23-year-old will make the 30-man Tour Championship in his rookie season – a factor that has often weighed heavily when recent Rookie of the Year ballots have been cast.

“I said if I have a chance going to Atlanta, that’s all I need,” he said. “You never know. You see Bill Haas when he won, he was 20-something, and he won that week $12 million. It’s great being in the position of having a chance already, and going to the last three (events), that’s something good.”
