PHOENIX – Sei Young Kim and Brittany Lang played as if they were really trying to set Wildfire Golf Club ablaze Thursday at the JTCB Founders Cup.
With 9-under-par 63s, they scorched the place in the first round, matching the tournament course record held by five other players.
(Update, 9:37 p.m. ET: Mi Hyang Lee set a tournament course record with a 10-under 62.)
Kim and Lang were both bogey free leading the morning wave, one shot ahead of Giulia Sergas and two ahead of Anna Nordqvist, Gerina Piller, Pernilla Lindberg and Dani Holmqvist when they left the course.
“I putted great all day,” Lang said.
Lang, 30, made five consecutive birdies in the middle of her round but kept pressing for more knowing players would be going low at Wildfire.
“If you’re 5, 6, 7 or under out here, it doesn't matter,” Lang said. “You’ve got to keep making birdies, because these girls are so, so good.”
Kim, 23, is looking to add to the three LPGA titles she won last year as the tour’s Rookie of the Year. She’s looking to try to top last season.
“My goal is Olympics, to represent my country,” Kim said. “The second one is four wins this year.”
