DORAL, Fla. – The 3-iron returned, thanks to a diver and Donald Trump.
Rory McIlroy’s 3-iron that he threw into the lake adjacent to the eighth fairway during Friday’s second round was fished out of the water on Saturday and returned to the world No. 1 on Sunday as he prepared for his final round at the WGC-Cadillac Championship by Trump.
McIlroy and Trump spoke briefly on the driving range, with Trump announcing to onlookers that "13 is an unlucky number," and that he wanted 14 clubs back in McIlroy's bag.
The Northern Irishman put the once-drowned club back in his bag for Sunday's final round, but sources say he will return it to Trump after the round and it will be put on display at Doral.
McIlroy said he played with only 13 clubs on Saturday because he, “didn’t need [the 3-iron].” Nike Golf sent him a new 3-iron on Friday, although McIlroy said he normally doesn’t carry the club, opting instead for four wedges.
