WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W. Va. – Tom Watson is planning a little recon mission for potential team members next weekend.
With no players in contention to earn a spot on this year’s Ryder Cup team having ever played Gleneagles in a competitive round, the United States captain has invited “about 20” of them to join him for practice rounds next Saturday and Sunday in advance of The Open Championship.
He said that, so far, “four or five” have accepted the invitation.
“I thought that was a good thing to do, and it gives them a chance to get used to the time change going over to The Open Championship,” Watson explained. “You get to see the course at least once before they get there or potentially get there. Not all of these players are in the top-six or top-five right now.”
He understood that, because of scheduling, many players aren’t able to make the trip.
“I've asked all these players to come. Most of them can't make it because they're playing either the Scottish Open or the John Deere Classic.”
