Michelle Wie withdrew from the Kingsmill LPGA Championship because of a hip injury after posting a 7-over 78 in the first round.
Wie made only one birdie in her opener against six bogeys and a double bogey, and her score left her ahead of only two women in the 144-player field. Several onlookers tweeted that Wie was limping after signing her card, and Wie released a statement on Twitter shortly after completing her round:
Regrettably, I need to withdraw today due to a left hip injury that has been bothering me this week.— Michelle Wie (@themichellewie) May 14, 2015
The @KingsmillLPGA Championship is one of my favorite events and I would like to thank the tournament staff and fans for their hospitality.— Michelle Wie (@themichellewie) May 14, 2015
The withdrawal marks the latest setback for Wie, who has yet to get on track this year and remains in search of her first top-10 finish. After capturing two wins last year, she withdrew from both the Meijer LPGA Classic and the Evian Championship last summer because of a lingering finger injury.
