Woods watches Vonn break World Cup skiing record

With girlfriend Lindsey Vonn on the verge of breaking the record for most women’s Alpine skiing World Cup victories, Tiger Woods flew from his home in Florida to Italy to greet her at the finish line Monday.

Woods didn’t tell Vonn he was coming, and he wore a ski mask that covered most of his face.

When she saw Woods in the finish area, Vonn immediately recognized the mask – “He loves that stupid mask” – and exclaimed, “No way!”, according to The Associated Press.

“I didn’t think this could get any better than (Sunday) with my entire family here, but now with Tiger here, this is unbelievable,” she told reporters. “I said, ‘I can’t believe you came.’ And he said, ‘I told you.’

“I had no idea he was here. He told everyone to keep it a secret and I’m surprised. Normally no one can keep a secret in my family. … He just showed up. … He has a tournament soon. So he’s got a lot of work and I’m surprised that he was able to come all the way over here for a few hours to watch me ski.”

Woods last saw Vonn race on Dec. 21, 2013, when she skied off the course in her last race before ending her bid for the 2014 Winter Olympics.

“I’m so surprised that he’s here,” she said. “This is a much better memory (than Val d’Isere) that we can have forever.”

On Sunday, Vonn said that Woods was watching from home with his daughter, Sam, when Vonn tied the record and mentioned that Woods will be in attendance for some of her upcoming races in Colorado.
