McIlroy caps off 'frustrating week' with 3-under 69

RSS

AUGUSTA, Ga. – It was the Sunday round Rory McIlroy had anticipated. Unfortunately, it followed a Friday card he’d hoped to avoid, and his closing effort did little more than boost the Ulsterman’s confidence.

McIlroy teed off two hours before the leaders on Sunday and closed what was otherwise a disappointing week with a 3-under 69 to move into the top 10 at the Masters.

“It’s been a frustrating week, because I felt like from tee-to green I played as good as the leaders. I don't think I've ever played as good tee to green around this course as I have this week,” said McIlroy, who birdied his last three on the opening nine and managed three more on the closing stretch to match his best final round at the Masters.

McIlroy began the week as the betting favorite and was tied for 12th after an opening-round 71, but on Friday he made double bogeys at Nos. 4 and 10 to drop into a tie for 46th. He recovered on Saturday (71), but the damage had already been done.

“Hopefully I can start seeing a few more putts go in, and get more confidence,” McIlroy said.
