AUGUSTA, Ga. – Phil Mickelson’s love affair with the Masters and Augusta National isn’t just reserved for rounds played on Thursday-Sunday.
He’s a charmer during practice rounds as well.
Tuesday at Augusta National, Mickelson made a friendly wager with a patron that he could get up and down from behind the sixth green.
“He was mouthing off about ‘hard shot, get this up and down, no chance, blah, blah, blah’,” Mickelson said about the man. “It wasn’t that hard a shot, and I should have gotten it up and down and I did hit a good shot.”
Mickelson chipped to 7 feet below the hole and missed the uphill putt.
“I missed it, I had to pay him,” he said. “That’s what happens when you lose.”
That story is funny in itself, but Mickelson didn’t have the proper money in his pocket to pay off the bet.
He was asked by media if he ever carries bills that small.
“I don’t,” he said with a smile. “I had to get a five from a caddie.”
