Many students mention in lessons that although they have successful practice sessions at the range, they are unable to bring those great shots to the golf course.
This is a common problem and the main reason for this is our preparation while we are at the range.
Most people hit just a few clubs and repeat the same shots over and over again. Although this is important for working on technique, we never play like that on the course.
To help your golf game transition better from the range to the golf course, experiment with these practice routines:
• 1. Play holes on the range. Picture hole No. 1 at your home course and hit the shots that the hole would call for. Then play hole No. 2, hole No. 3, etc.
• 2. If you are working on aim, change clubs and targets often. Most people have trouble aiming in different directions, so work on that on the range.
• 3. Use your pre-shot routine for every shot. On the course (hopefully), you pick a club, line up to the target, take a practice swing and hit the ball. Do this at the range too!
• 4. At the short-game area, practice shots from all over and from different kinds of lies rather than hitting several balls from one place. Mix it up!
• 5. While putting, make each putt count. Line up each ball and change your target and length on every putt. Give yourself different challenges, such as uphill, downhill and sidehill putts from varied distances.
Set aside some time in each of your practice sessions to try these exercises.
You will find that your transition to the course will be better and your practice sessions will be more purposeful.
