Congressional cut line second highest of season

AT&T National

BETHESDA, Md. – From the onset of the week at the AT&T National, the buzz was Congressional CC was playing more like a U.S. Open course than it did a year ago when it hosted the national championship. By the look of the cut line, that seems true.

The 36-hole cut will be made at 6-over 148, which is two shots higher than the cut last year in the U.S. Open here. Two weeks ago at The Olympic Club, the two-round cut was 8 over par.

In fact, the AT&T National cut is the second highest this season. The Masters cut had been second highest at 5 over.

The combination of a difficult setup and triple-digit heat were equal factors in the high cut. When Ken Venturi won the 1964 U.S. Open here in similar, extreme conditions, the course played as a par-70 with the cut coming at 10-over 150.
