IOC: 'Time is ticking' for Rio Olympic organizers

With the Olympic venues for several sports, including golf, still undecided, the International Olympic Committee told Rio organizers on Tuesday that “time is ticking,” and they need to forge ahead with preparations for the 2016 Games.

Speaking to reporters in Switzerland, IOC spokesman Mark Adams said, “Our message remains there is time, but time is ticking. They (Rio organizers) need to carry on attacking this one with all vigor.”

The land where the golf course will be constructed remains the source of a legal dispute, but Carlos Nuzman, head of the Rio organizing committee, attempted to allay any concerns.

“We are in a very good, comfortable situation,” he told reporters. “I think we are in a very good way.”

Construction on the Olympic course in Rio de Janeiro (to be designed by Gil Hanse) was scheduled to begin in October, but the land on which the course is to be built remains in a legal dispute. The International Golf Federation said that any delay wouldn’t “significantly disrupt preparations for test events planned for 2015,” according to a recent report by The Associated Press.
