SAN MARTIN, Calif. – Brooks Koepka was 9 inches from being a co-leader after two rounds of the Frys.com Open. Jason Kokrak hit a 6-iron inside of a foot on his final hole, the par-5 ninth, to make eagle and reach 10 under par.
Koepka leads through 36 holes at 11 under.
“We had 206 (yards) to the front (of the green) and then 214 to the hole and a helping wind off the left,” said Kokrak, who shot 6-under 65 Friday, of his final-hole approach. “Hit a perfect cut 6-iron. Landed perfectly in the middle of the green or right on the front edge, and had to take a peek in the middle of the hole.”
Kokrak tied for second at this event in 2012, which sealed his Tour card for this past season. He kept it by finishing 62nd in FedEx Cup points.
“I like the golf course,” he said. “The greens are a little bit slower than they were last year, but I think it’s going to take another two solid rounds to take this thing home.”
