Hoggard: Day 2 Presidents Cup predictions

Day 2 fourball session (all times Eastern; local time 16 hours ahead)

5:35 p.m.: Bubba Watson-Webb Simpson (U.S.) vs. Ernie Els-Ryo Ishikawa (International)

The line: The American rookies were nearly flawless in Thursday’s leadoff spot, cruising past Els and Ishikawa, 4 and 2, and carding seven birdies. Ishikawa played well in his debut at Harding Park, but his late arrival at Royal Melbourne (Tuesday night) and unfamiliarity with the course have hurt. U.S., 2 and 1.

5:49 p.m.: Tiger Woods-Dustin Johnson (U.S.) vs. Jason Day-Aaron Baddeley (International)

The line: Woods will be looking for redemption after his Day 1 disaster with Steve Stricker, and DJ showed plenty of moxie in his foursomes match against Day and Baddeley. As for the Australians, they will struggle to recover after blowing a 3-up lead with seven holes to play. U.S., 3 and 2.

6:03 p.m.: Phil Mickelson-Jim Furyk (U.S.) vs. Adam Scott-K.T. Kim (International)

The line: The success of the surprising U.S. duo on Thursday is not that outlandish considering Lefty’s affinity for that other Alister MacKenzie gem (Augusta National), but Scott appears ready to hoist an entire nation on his shoulders. Halve.

6:17 p.m.: Bill Haas-Nick Watney (U.S.) vs. Geoff Ogilvy- K.J. Choi (International)

The line: Haas and Watney didn’t make a birdie until the ninth hole paired in the foursomes session, although they did grind out a halve. This time, however, Ogilvy’s home-course advantage will be enough to carry the Internationals. Internationals, 1 up.

6:31 p.m.: Steve Stricker-Matt Kuchar (U.S.) vs. Y.E. Yang-Robert Allenby (International)

The line: Stricker struggled with his ball-striking and his putting while paired with Woods on Thursday and Kuchar showed serious nerves late in his foursomes match. Still, Allenby’s fourball record is hardly exemplary (4-5-0) and Yang is still reeling after Thursday’s loss. Halve.

6:45 p.m.: David Toms-Hunter Mahan (U.S.) vs. Charl Schwartzel-Retief Goosen (International)

The line: Schwartzel certainly has the game to play Royal Melbourne (see Masters, 2011), but Goosen doesn’t appear to be on form and a pairing with Toms is a perfect fit for Mahan, who considers himself “an old soul.” U.S., 3 and 2.
