Mickelson nearly forgets to register for PGA

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Phil Mickelson nearly committed a cardinal sin that no major winner has ever been able to overcome.

He almost forgot to register.

Players are required to register for each tournament prior to the opening round, which is why Mickelson was forced to show up at Oak Hill Country Club on Wednesday after deciding not to practice on site all day.

Walking into the clubhouse at approximately 1:30 p.m. local time, wearing a white t-shirt, dark shorts and flip-flops, the five-time major champion registered for the PGA Championship in the clubhouse, then quickly left just a few minutes later.

Failure to register would have resulted in disqualification from the tournament.

That very scenario happened to Chad Campbell three years ago, when he failed to register for the Deutsche Bank Championship. He played one round before the gaffe was discovered.
