Numbers released by the PGA of America on Friday suggest participation in golf continues to decline.
Through May 2011, rounds of golf are down 4.9 percent as compared with the same period in 2010. On a monthly basis, rounds in May were down 7 percent as compared with May 2010.
Weather did play a role in the decrease of rounds, though did not account for all of the drop. The number of playable days for golf around the country were down 3.5 percent year-to-date against 2010.
Among the 10 states which have seen the largest percentage drop in rounds played year-to-date, all but Indiana saw a double-digit percent decrease in the number of days available for play.
Only two states saw a fairly steep drop in the number of rounds played year-to-date and saw a substantial increase in the number of days open for play. Nebraska has experienced an 8.1 percent drop in YTD rounds played but an increase in 11.3 percent in the total number of days available for play, while West Virginia has absorbed a 14.6 percent drop in YTD rounds with a 9.7 percent increase in days open.
