Furyk says loss his lowest point of the year

MEDINAH, Ill. – Jim Furyk has had a tough season. It didn’t get any better Sunday at the Ryder Cup.

“It’s the lowest point of my year,” Furyk said.

That’s saying a lot coming from a man who led the U.S. Open through 69 holes and failed to convert his second major, then made double bogey on the 72^nd hole of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational to lose to Keegan Bradley.

Furyk was a captain’s pick for this Ryder Cup even though many believed his shaky summer and inability to close in pressure situations would be a liability at Medinah.

With two holes remaining in his singles match against Sergio Garcia, Furyk was 1 up. Garcia ultimately won 1 up when Furyk bogeyed the last two holes. The point moved Europe within one point of retaining the Ryder Cup, which it did 15 minutes later with Martin Kaymer’s victory.

“It’s been a very difficult year,” Furyk said. “I’ve played very well this year but haven’t closed the door. I’m pretty sure Sergio would tell you that I outplayed him today but I didn’t win and I lost the match. I’ve had a lot of that happen this year.”

In eight Ryder Cup appearances, Furyk has a 9-17-4 career record. He was 1-3 this week.
