PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – Tiger Woods takes a load of momentum and confidence to Doral and the WGC-Cadillac Championship this week.
Woods, who tied for second at the Honda Classic on Sunday after a final-round 62, will be looking to win for the fourth time at Doral. He won there in 2005, 2006 and 2007.
Woods heads south to Miami, though, with more on his mind than just trying to end his 30-month PGA Tour winless spell.
“I’m thrilled at the fact that each and every week, my game’s gotten better,” Woods said. “Each tournament, it’s gotten better, and that’s the whole idea heading into April.”
By April, of course, he means the Masters.
Woods looks like he’s finding the form he wants for the year’s first major. He led the Honda field in total driving and tied for third in greens in regulation. Though Woods didn’t hit his driver a lot at PGA National, he hit it well, enduring just one big miss with it the entire week. He’ll likely be unleashing the driver a lot more at Doral, where the big hitters are able to shrink the Dick Wilson design by bombing tee shots over all those bunkers in the corners of doglegs.
Woods said he felt Sunday’s finish coming.
“I think I just need the time,” Woods said of his rebuilt game. “I switched coaches, and I got hurt for most of last year, and I started putting the pieces together. Overall, my finishes have been pretty good since Australia on. It was just a matter of `Keep building, keep sticking with it, the process is coming, I'm hitting more solid shots, I'm making more putts, my speed is getting back.' It's just everything is coming, and I just need to keep progressing, just keep sticking with it, and it's going to turn.”
