DeChambeau not yet eligible for Ryder Cup points

After a sizzling start to his professional career, Bryson DeChambeau has beeen the subject of some discussion as a possible addition to the U.S. Ryder Cup team this fall. But despite the buzz, his Ryder Cup point total remains at zero.

DeChambeau's T-4 finish at the RBC Heritage in his pro debut earned him $259,600, a total that would have put him 74th in the U.S. points race that awards players one point per dollar earned (two points per dollar in majors). But as the PGA of America noted, DeChambeau is not yet eligible to accrue points because he does not have A-3 PGA of America member classification - a distinction reserved for exempt PGA Tour players.

DeChambeau currently has no status on the PGA Tour, and is using an allotment of seven sponsor exemptions as he looks to secure status for this season and beyond. His finish at Harbour Town earned him 123 FedEx Cup points, and should he earn 248 more points he would secure special temporary membership, which would allow him to receive unlimited sponsor exemptions this season.

In order for DeChambeau to earn a card for next season, he would need to equal the FedEx Cup total or earnings of No. 125 on either list this season - a moving target that last season required either 458 points or $747,899.

His plight is similar to the one faced in 2013 by Jordan Spieth, who like DeChambeau attempted to earn status via sponsor exemptions. Spieth picked up special temporary membership and then became a fully-exempt member by virtue of his win at the 2013 John Deere Classic, ultimately earning his way onto the 2014 Ryder Cup team at Gleneagles.

DeChambeau's point total still leaves him more than 2,000 points (i.e. $2 million in earnings) behind J.B. Holmes, who currently holds the eighth and final automatic qualifying spot for the American team.

DeChambeau is in the field this week at the Valero Texas Open, and he is expected to make starts in the coming weeks at the Wells Fargo Championship, AT&T Byron Nelson, Dean & Deluca Invitational and the Memorial Tournament.
