Emotional Ko makes cut with Nepal on her mind

With Nepal on her mind in a late rally Friday at the North Texas Shootout, Rolex world No. 1 Lydia Ko battled to keep her perfect cut streak alive.

Ko’s effort kept her pledge in play to donate her winnings to relief efforts benefitting victims of the devastating earthquake in Nepal. If she had missed the cut, there would have been no winnings to donate.

“All day I was thinking, make some birdies for the kids in Nepal, that's my big goal,” Ko said. “I think if I was just missing the cut, yes, I would be disappointed.”

With three birdies on her second nine, Ko squeezed into the weekend, making the cut on the number. She said she was emotional needing to make a 6-foot putt for a final par to make the cut on the number.

“I was going to cry after my putt,” Ko said.

Ko, 18, has now made the cut in all 51 LPGA events she has played as an amateur and a professional. She shot 68 and sits nine shots off the lead.

“I was thinking a lot about Nepal today,” Ko said.
