The three assistants have combined for 10 Ryder Cup appearances as players, compiling a 14-18-6 record in the biennial match-play competition. Individually, they were part of victorious teams in 1997, 2002, '04, '06, '12 and '14.
“Three guys that I’ve known for a very, very long time. Three guys that are going to tell me probably what I don’t want to hear as opposed to what I do want to hear, which is more important that anything," Clarke said.
“Guys I trust.”
Clarke will appoint two more assistants in the future.
Harrington, 44, was a vice captain for Paul McGinley during Europe’s 2014 triumph. Bjorn, 45, was an active member of the most recent team, but has three times (2004, ’10, ’12) served as an assistant. This will be Lawrie’s first turn in the role. The Scot, 47, was disappointed in not being selected to serve two years ago, when the event was contested at Gleneagles.
This year’s Matches will take place at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn., Sept. 30-Oct. 2.
