Lewis out to end 33-month drought at Wildfire

PHOENIX – Stacy Lewis may be flying under the radar as the LPGA makes its American start this year at the Bank of Hope Founders Cup, but that could change in a hurry.

Lewis relishes this little West Coast swing.

She has a victory, two second-place finishes and a T-4 in her last four starts at Wildfire Golf Club, home to the Founders Cup. She broke through to win the first of her two majors at the ANA Inspiration in Rancho Mirage, Calif., in 2011. The year’s first major is just two weeks away.

The Founders Cup, with its celebration of the pioneers of the women’s game, has always inspired Lewis.

LPGA founders Shirley Spork, Marilynn Smith and Marlene Hagge Vossler are here this week. The special pioneer honorees are Hollis Stacy, a four-time major championship winner, and Sandra Post, an eight-time LPGA winner.

“I like the concept of this event,” Lewis said. “I like getting the founders and the past players involved in our tour. I think they should be more involved.”

Lewis helped fund a movie about the LPGA founders and is listed as one of the movie’s executive producers.

“Majors are important weeks, but this is one of our most important weeks, too,” Lewis said.

Lewis is looking to win her elusive 12th LPGA title, her first in 33 months, since she won the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship in June of 2014.
