CROMVOIRT, Netherlands – U.S. Solheim Cup captain Angela Stanford is already making contingency plans ahead of the Solheim Cup.
Former world No. 1 Lilia Vu is on site at Bernardus Golf as the Americans’ alternate, just in case Angel Yin, who has played just once since June because of stomach issues, can’t play. Rose Zhang is also dealing with a minor back injury that forced her to withdraw from Canada last month.
The 27-year-old Yin, who owns a 5-3-1 record in three previous Solheim Cups and automatically qualified for her fourth appearance via points, started experiencing stomach pain and nausea during the KPMG Women’s PGA in late June, and after withdrawing from the third round, she was admitted to the hospital, where she stayed for six days.
While Yin hasn’t revealed what exactly she’s dealing with, she did say she lost 35 pounds during the ordeal and even had to request different sized uniforms.
“If I feel I’m not fit for the team, I’m going to let her know,” Yin told Golfweek a couple weeks ago before a missed cut in her return at the FM Championship. “The last thing I want to do is drag the team down.”
Yin also told Golfweek that she wouldn’t board the plane to Netherlands unless she intended to compete. Stanford said the captain’s agreement stipulates that every player must play at least once before Sunday singles.
“Well, she’s here,” Stanford said on Tuesday. “She’s playing. She’s played two practice rounds. … We’re still trying to gauge and we’re watching, but she’s here. She’s very happy to be here, and she’s playing.”
Vu earned the clinching half-point at the last Solheim Cup, in 2024, though she has missed 10 straight cuts in individual events and slipped to No. 235 in the world rankings.
