HOYLAKE, England – From the deep rough left of the 17th fairway on Thursday at the Open Championship, Henrik Stenson needed two swings to free himself from the knee-high fescue and only a split second to snap his club over his knee.
“I didn’t see anything, did you?” smiled Stenson, who scrambled for par on the hole and closed with an even-par 72. “My gap wedge is going to need a little love after lunch.”
Stenson is no stranger to the occasional flashes of anger on the golf course.
At last year’s BMW Championship he snapped the head off his driver and later trashed his locker in the Conway Farms clubhouse (he did pay for the damages), only to win his next start at the Tour Championship and claim the FedEx Cup title.
