Spieth cracks driver on eve of Masters defense

Jordan Spieth will have a new driver in the bag when he begins his Masters title defense Thursday morning, and it’s not by choice.

Speaking to Golf Channel at the Golf Writers Association of America’s annual awards banquet Wednesday night, Spieth said he cracked the head of his driver earlier in the day.

Titleist has already provided Spieth with a replacement which – per Golf Channel Insider Tim Rosaforte – Spieth says he actually likes better.

As for how he performed with the cracked driver he’s used for the last two years, Spieth has evidenced a dramatic improvement off tee, moving from 146th in total driving in 2014 to 52nd in 2015 to 24th in 2016.

The defending champion is scheduled to tee off at 9:48 a.m. Thursday morning alongside Paul Casey and U.S. Amateur champion Bryson DeChambeau.
