Brendan Steele, who won the Valero Texas Open in 2011, shot a 2-under 70 on Friday to hang on to the lead in this year’s edition. Here’s how things shake out in San Antonio after Round 2 was suspended because of darkness with just a handful of players still on the course.
Leaderboard: Brendan Steele (-10), Scott Langley (-7), Stuart Appleby (-7), Charley Hoffman (-7), seven players at -6.
What it means: Steele’s 70 was six shots worse than his opening-round 64, but it was still good for a three-shot lead. He started fast, reeling off birdies on No. 2, 3 and 4. Two bogeys in his next five holes slowed him down a bit, and he canceled out two back-nine birdies with a double bogey.
Round of the day: Sunghoon Kang and Carlos Ortiz both shot 5-under 67. Kang eagled the par-5 second hole and made the turn in 5-under 31, but double-bogeyed the 10th. He recovered with three birdies and one bogey the rest of the way. Ortiz made six birdies against a single bogey to shoot his 67, which was an 11-stroke improvement over his first round. Sadly, it wasn’t enough to keep him around for the weekend.
Best of the rest: Six players shot 4-under 68, so we’ll give the nod to the one who’s highest on the leaderboard. That would be Langley, who is T-2, three shots off the lead. He offset a lone bogey with three birdies and an eagle.
Biggest disappointment: Zach Johnson was in good shape after opening with a 69, but he fell far down the leaderboard after a second-round 75. At even par, he looks like he’ll make the cut on the number.
Shot of the day: Scott Stallings dunked an 8-iron from 200 yards at the par-3 13th hole, his fourth hole of the day. Good thing he made it, too, as he is right on the projected cut line of even par.
