Michelle Wie withdrew from the Kingsmill LPGA Championship because of a hip injury after posting a 7-over 78 in the first round.
Wie made only one birdie in her opener against six bogeys and a double bogey, and her score left her ahead of only two women in the 144-player field. Several onlookers tweeted that Wie was limping after signing her card, and Wie released a statement on Twitter shortly after completing her round:
Regrettably, I need to withdraw today due to a left hip injury that has been bothering me this week.

The @KingsmillLPGA Championship is one of my favorite events and I would like to thank the tournament staff and fans for their hospitality.

The withdrawal marks the latest setback for Wie, who has yet to get on track this year and remains in search of her first top-10 finish. After capturing two wins last year, she withdrew from both the Meijer LPGA Classic and the Evian Championship last summer because of a lingering finger injury.
