After making the cut on the number, Woods shot a 3-over 75 in the third round to drift toward the bottom of the standings at TPC Sawgrass. Woods was undone by the par 5s, playing four of the easiest holes on the Stadium Course in a cumulative 3 over.
Woods declined to speak with the media following his round.
Woods found 13 greens in regulation – compared with 10 of 18 during each of the first two rounds – but converted only two of eight birdie opportunities from inside 15 feet. He took 32 putts in the third round after needing only 27 each of the first two days.
Woods’ issues began on the par-5 second hole, where a hooked 3-wood hit a tree and failed to get past the forward tee. After a poor layup attempt, he left with a double bogey – his first such score in 62 attempts on that hole.
He made another double bogey on the par-5 ninth, where he was short of the green in two shots but fluffed two straight chips before missing a 10-foot putt for bogey. This was the first time Woods made multiple double bogeys on par 5s in the same round in his career.
After a 4-over 40 on the front side, Woods played the back nine in 1 under with eight pars and a birdie on No. 11.
