For the first time, Phil Mickelson won a tournament while playing in the final group with Tiger Woods. Mickelson led Woods by two going into the final round, and closed with a 69 to Woods’ 72. Finishing second, one shot back, was Ernie Els, who lost the lead when he found the water and made bogey on the final hole.

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The purse for this year’s Masters has increased to $9 million, $1 million more than last year’s purse, officials announced on Saturday.

This week’s champion will receive $1.62 million, giving the Masters the game’s third-highest purse behind the PGA Championship ($10 million) and The Players Championship ($9.5 million). At $9 milllion, it is tied with the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, WGC-Match Play and WGC-Cadillac Championship.

Saturday’s announcement marks the second purse increase in four years at the year’s first major championship.
