Lucas Glover withdrew from the season-opening Hyundai Tournament of Champions on Friday with a knee injury, his manager confirmed to GTC.
Glover sprained his right knee while paddle boarding on Saturday morning and an MRI confirmed there was no serious damage, Jimmy Johnston with Crown Sports Management said.
“People have said it takes about a week and a half to get over something like that,” Johnston said. “He’s probably just being safe.”
Glover was scheduled to tee off at 11:35 a.m. (local time) and will not be replaced in the field. That leaves 27 players in the 2012 season-opening field.
Glover’s next scheduled start is the Sony Open but Johnston said he may wait and start his year at the Humana Challenge in two weeks.
Glover told The Associated Press this week he planned on playing nearly every West Coast tournament, except Humana, in an attempt to improve his position in the world golf ranking and earn a spot in the next two World Golf Championships events.
This is the second consecutive year an odd injury has cost a player a start at Kapalua. Last year Geoff Ogilvy, a former U.S. Open champion like Glover, withdrew after cutting himself on coral while swimming.
