ARDMORE, Pa. – Here’s an ominous sign for this week’s U.S. Open if there ever was one: At exactly 6:55 a.m. Monday morning, the horn sounded at Merion Golf Club.
The morning started with rain and the forecast calls for it to continue with persistence throughout the day, with a flash flood warning in effect until late-morning.
This week could be reminiscent of the 2009 edition at Bethpage’s Black Course, when torrential rain forced a Monday finish.

There is a silver lining to these dark clouds, though. Tuesday calls for scattered thunderstorms, followed by sun and warmth Wednesday, which should help to dry out a saturated course.
Already the weather is affecting practice schedules. Rickie Fowler was among those who tweeted early Monday morning that he would eschew practicing in the rain.
