Among the highlights of Tuesday’s “Morning Drive” was an interview with former U.S. Ryder Cup captain Hal Sutton, who famously paired Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson in team play at Oakland Hills in 2004 and suffered one of the worse losses in recent history, a 18 ½ to 9 ½ trouncing.
Sutton was asked if he had any words of wisdom for current U.S. Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III.
“I don't know that guys are following anyone but their own selves today. We live in a pretty selfish world. It's not a criticism, in my mind that's a fact,” Sutton said.
“In order to be a leader you've got to understand that from the beginning. These guys don't want to follow anybody. The hard part about being a captain is you're the greatest guy in the world if you win and did the worse job in the world if you lose and you never hit a shot. And with golf I think there's more to it than that.”
On cue, Robert Allenby, who was guest co-host for the day, addressed the idea of pairing America’s two top players:
“I can understand why he put (Woods and Mickelson) together,” Allenby said. “But me, personally, I would have never put them together.”
