U.S. Ryder Cup captain to be announced Thursday

PGA of America president Ted Bishop will announce the next U.S. Ryder Cup captain during the 8:30 a.m. segment Thursday on NBC’s "Today" show.
What remains to be seen is whether the PGA sticks to its recent formula to select a captain: a former major champion (now between the ages of 45-50) who still plays on Tour, though not so competitively as to challenge for a spot on the team.
David Toms fits that description and was believed to be the favorite to land the gig, but there has been a groundswell of support recently for Larry Nelson and Tom Watson, who said over the weekend that he would be interested in the job, if asked.
On Tuesday, 2008 U.S. Ryder Cup captain Paul Azinger tweeted, “The American Ryder Cup captain will be picked soon. If its not @davidtomsgolf or @Larry_Nelson I'll be shocked.”
The timing of the announcement surprised some, but in the past six years the PGA has unveiled the next captain sometime between November and January (Paul Azinger on Nov. 6, 2006; Corey Pavin on Dec. 11, 2008; and Davis Love III on Jan. 20, 2011).
The 2014 Ryder Cup will be held at Gleneagles in Scotland. Europe is expected to announce its next captain in January.
