PARIS — Ryder Cup star Tommy Fleetwood pulled out of the Open de France ahead of Saturday’s third round after feeling unwell.
Organizers posted a brief message on the DP World Tour website saying Fleetwood “sadly had to withdraw due to illness.” No further details were given.
Fleetwood posted to X, formerly Twitter, on Sunday saying he “hated having to withdraw.”
“I honestly thought I might have had a chance of playing but I was too ill,” he wrote. “I’m so sorry to all the fans that supported this week and especially to all of the sponsors and organizers of such a great event. I have so many fond memories of Le Golf National and will be back in the future!!”
The two-time major runner-up was 6-under after his second round on Friday.
Fellow Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick went on to win the tournament shooting a 20 under at Le Golf National outside Paris, where the Ryder Cup was staged in 2018.
It was Fitzpatrick’s fourth win of the season.
