Jon Rahm equaled the worst 36-hole performance of his professional career, at least judging by pure score, Friday at the DP World Tour’s BMW PGA Championship.
But he’s also likely to achieve a more unfavorable designation once play wraps for the day.
Rahm backed up his highest round on the European circuit in nearly five years, a first-round, 6-over 78, with a second-round 77 Friday at Wentworth outside of London. Rahm’s 11-over 155 tied his worst 36-hole score since he shot 78-77 at the 2018 U.S. Open. But unlike that week at Shinnecock, where Rahm was 15 over yet beat 30 players, he’ll miss the BMW PGA cut ahead of far fewer competitors who completed two rounds.
With several players still on the course, Rahm was on track to, for the first time in his career, finish last among non-withdrawals/disqualifications in his career. Even if he doesn’t end up last, he’ll surely post his worst-career finish, currently solo 138th.
Rahm beat just seven players at the 2018 Northern Trust, although that was a field of only 119 competitors.
For the second straight day, Rahm carded five bogeys and a double. He did have one more birdie, making two on Friday.
Leader Ryan Gerard was 23 shots clear of Rahm, who fell 13 shots below the cut line.
Rahm’s first-round 78 at Wentworth marked his highest non-major round since his opening-round 78 at the 2021 Andalucia Masters, which, according to Data Golf, was also his worst true-strokes-gained performance through 36 holes as a pro (-3.04). This week’s performance is likely to fall below that.
Rahm’s worst single round as a pro came at the 2017 Players Championship, where he shot 10-over 82 in the third round.
