Charley Hull went from birdie look to nightmare in no time Thursday at the ISPS Handa Women’s Scottish Open.
Hull had 20 feet for birdie at Dundonald Links’ par-5 fifth hole, but about five minutes later, she walked off the green with a quadruple-bogey 9.
“I don’t think there’s a flat spot on it,” one of the TV commentators said as Hull stepped into her birdie putt. “This is way outside the left for Charley … I think. It’s one of those greens where it really could go anywhere.”

Hull’s birdie try broke hard right and zipped past the hole, rolling off the false front and down into the rough, near where Nelly Korda had just ended up after hitting her second shot long of the green and chipping through the green with her third.
While Korda would smartly chip 12 feet back past the hole and eventually settle for a two-putt bogey, Hull’s first chip couldn’t quite get past the false front, her ball rolling back to her feet.
She quickly hit her sixth shot, catching it heavy, then did similar with her seventh.
“This is now turning into a nightmare,” another commentator said.

Her eighth shot – and fourth chip – finally did what Korda did, and Hull was able to make the 12-footer to avoid a quintuple bogey.
Hull eventually carded a 6-over 78 to open her tournament.
